unlamplike feelings week » day 5: sleep
Danny didn’t know what he was expecting when he opened the door, but an Indian woman sleeping underneath the conference table was not it.
"What the — who are you?" He looked closer. "Why do you have a pillow?!"
The woman stirred, but remained bundled up in her makeshift bed. “My patient went into labour at midnight and it took six hours for her to finally deliver. And now I have an hour between appointments so I’m getting my well-deserved beauty sleep, okay? Shut the door on your way out please.”
There was a moment of silence. She listened for the sound of a door closing, but there was only an indignant huff coming from the doorway. (And she could practically hear Danny crossing his arms.)
She rolled over to face him and reluctantly opened her eyes. (He was crossing his arms.) “I’m Mindy Lahiri. The new doctor? I started two days ago.”
All Mindy got was a single eyebrow raise in response.
She sighed. Time for the big guns. “I’ve been here since Tuesday, which means I was here on Wednesday morning when I walked into your office only to be welcomed with your half-naked ass on the floor, passed out with an envelope in your hand addressed to a ‘Christina’, who clearly is a lucky lady considering she gets this.” She says sarcastically, while gesturing to his body. ”Now I’m assuming Dr. Schulman doesn’t know about this little tighty-whiteys incident, but I would be happy to let him know should I not get another 40 minutes of uninterrupted z’s.”
She closed her eyes and turned away from him, cozying up in her blanket again. This time, the sound of Danny slamming the door could not be missed.
Stomping back to his own office, Dr. Schulman himself stopped Danny in his tracks. “What’s with the case of the grumpies, Dr. Castellano?”
"I hate the new girl."
